Hey Hermanos
This morning we woke up to a beautiful morning in Cordoba, sang some songs in Spanish, and ate a delicious breakfast of fried eggs, tortillas, beans, fresh cantalope, and of course Mexican coffee with pure sugar cane sugar!
After breakfast, we spread out and had a quiet time and practiced our VBS skits before going to a small church called filadelfia in a village called potrero about fourty five minutes away from the MITC. There weren’t many kids to do a VBS with, so instead we were able to sit in the service the whole time. We sang some songs in Spanish with the Mexicans, many of them were traditional songs that we were able to recognize, which was really neat. They introduced us and we sang a couple songs including Fields are White and Prince of Peace, which the Mexicans really seemed to enjoy and responded with an amen, which was really cool. Mike spoke about grace and the brevity of our lives with Dan as his translator. It was really impacting to hear Mike say a short sentence and hear it repeated in Spanish, and the pauses in between phrases allowed me to really listen to what he was saying to us, which I think helped us focus on his words. God really spoke through Mike today and it was evident because he was preaching a different message than he had planned, and it showed me just how much God was working in him and speaking through him. After the message, Brooke, the intern from Louisiana who is working with the MITC announced it was Kristina’s birthday, which resulted in the congregation singing “Feliz Cumpleanos” and them lining up to give her kisses and hugs. She looked a little confused, but the gesture was really sweet and she told me later how touching it was.
They fed us a wonderful lunch, with a sort of fried chicken patty, noodles, bread, beans, mashed potatoes, a hot avocado sauce, chocolate cake, and a refreshing glass of Coke (with real sugar cane sugar!). It was definitely one of the highlights of my day, and we were all so grateful to get to sit down and eat such a great meal in the heat of the day. After lunch, we returned to the MITC and had about an hour of down time, where the majority of our group took a good nap, before heading out to another church much closer to the school called Iglesia Ebenezer or The Torch. Here we also got to sing some songs with the Mexicans, and sing up stage as well, where they requested “Humble Thyself” and “We Fall Down.” Then when Mike got up to preach, the rest of us gathered the kids together to play games, sing songs, perform skits, color with them, and just get to love on the kids and try to communicate with them. John and the boys were a hit, when the younger kids decided to run after them, tackle them to the ground, and instigate tickle fights. But before too long Mike finished, and we had to leave the church. The people here are so grateful for us, and everyone greets us with big smiles and lots of Spanish words I don’t understand, but the language barrier has not hindered our ability to praise God together, which continues to amaze me. Right now we are just hanging out and anxiously awaiting more delicious food at dinner in less than an hour. I can’t wait to see the things God will do here, and in our hearts. Its amazing to think this is only our first complete day, and we still get to be here for six more! Be praying for us, we are so grateful to know that you guys are supporting us throughout this week!
-Much Love
